It is critical that we are aware of how we make sense of the world we live in. We create our own version of the world (internal maps comprised of beliefs, values and world views) that act as unconscious filters which bias what we see, hear, feel, taste and smell. We make sense of this information by creating narratives of how the world works. In turn, these narratives shape our beliefs, values and world views to again shape what information we sense and the narratives that we craft.

 

Each person has their bias in how they develop their filters and consequently how they understand the world.
For some people filters are broad and flexible while for others, narrow, rigid and static. Effective decision-making requires being aware of unconscious filters and how they influence our way of understanding the world and the decisions that we make. This requires courage for self-assessment and the willingness to challenge our internal maps/narratives of how the world works. When we do that, we open up many more opportunities and provide ourselves with greater flexibility to respond to challenges.

 

To perceive and understand the world appropriately requires:

 

  • Discovering the current unconscious ways of perceiving, understanding, thinking and decision-making and how to enhance these ways of being, for superior personal and organisational performance  

  • Discovering the current underlying patterns/beliefs/assumptions or schemas of customers, clients and stakeholders to inform enhanced product and service development.  

  • Understanding and making sense of volatile and complex environments

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE BUSINESS LANDSCAPE?

 

Organisations exist to serve the needs of society, clients, customers and stakeholders. To do this effectively requires being aware of what current and emerging needs are arising and to develop the appropriate products, services and policies to fulfil those needs. In an ever changing and increasingly complex business landscape this is challenging. We can imagine the business landscape to be like an elastic sheet that has many peaks and valleys. When change is introduced the whole surface changes in shape with new peaks forming, others disappearing, valleys changing into peaks and peaks into valleys. This dynamism reflects the daily turbulence of the business world as it is influenced by many modulators of change.

 

Decision-makers will need to sense and make sense of these factors and how they shape the business landscape. The insights gained from this process are foundational to assist decision-makers to define an organisation with the strategic intent and the capability to deliver to societal needs. This is a process of creativity requiring flexible perspectives and ways of thinking to sense and make sense of the information and use it effectively to define a business that is relevant and adaptive as the world changes.
